Falling Creek Falls is a County Park created as a joint venture between the Suwannee River Water Management District and the Columbia County Board of Commissioners.
On this sign we learned that settlers moved into the Falling Creek and Winfield area in the early 1850s, arriving in a wagon train from South Carolina.
A sawmill was established on Falling Creek, and a large turpentine distillery, two general stores, a grist mill and cotton gin were built in nearby Winfield. One of the general stores was moved and on display here.
Bob on the boardwalk. It's a short loop trail, about a mile in length.
Falling Creek Falls has a lot of water flowing over the 10' drop.
A man we met on the trail said that one week ago the water was so high it covered the waterfall completely.
The root beer colored water comes from the tannic water, formed by rotting leaves and vegetation that fall in the water.
Falling Creek is a tributary of the Suwannee River. It originates north of Lake City and flows for several miles through the falls area and then goes underground 1/4 mile below the falls. It comes back up to the surface and flows into the Suwannee River just north of White Springs.
I'll leave you with the sounds and sight of the rushing waters. Click on the video.
